It was created in 2001 by the then Environmental Information and Management Center (CIGEA) of the Environment Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA). It is currently managed by the Environment Agency, the highest management organization of CITMA.

It is registered in the National Registry of Serial Publications with No. 1961, Folio 054, Volume III dated April 10, 2001, ISSN 1683-8904.

It is a publication dedicated to the dissemination of scientific and informative articles, initially written by specialists and researchers from CITMA and other Cuban institutions and organizations related to environmental issues. The call for submissions was later extended to other countries, a practice that has been maintained and expanded to the present.

All articles undergo a rigorous, double-blind peer-review process to ensure the quality of their publications. The journal employs a team of national and international referees to ensure the quality of its publications.

In its beginnings and until 2014, the journal was available in .pdf format through the then Cuban Environment Portal www.medioambiente.cu and the Environmental Agency Portal www.ama.cu . Starting with Volume 20, Number 38 of 2020, it can be consulted at https://cmad.ama.cu , as well as in the Science Network Digital Journal Repository www.redciencia.cu .

The journal began as a semiannual publication (two volumes and two issues per year with 10 articles each). It is now published continuously, with an annual volume and more than 20 articles per year.

On May 14, 2021, the CITMA Evaluation Committee, responsible for the certification of serial publications in the field of science and technology, considered that the journal met the requirements set forth in Resolution 59/2000 and accordingly registered it in the Certification System for Serial Scientific and Technological Publications with the code 2556321. This places it in a position of greater rigor and national recognition, where interested authors have access to a certified medium for publishing their research results.
