Abstract
The municipality of Nuevitas, selected area for the implementation of Integrated Coastal Management Program (IMC) is part of the special region of sustainable development (REDS) Sabana – Camagüey Archipelago. This research deals with a synthesis of the foundations of the program, the diagnosis of the environmental situation by units selected, using GEO methodology (Global Environmental Outlook. UNEP, 1995) and the other one proposed by the Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP, 1996). It considers the IMC as a continuous and dynamic organizational process to preparation and implementation of the comprehensive plan for the development and protection of resources and ecosystems coastal region. We present some experiences and impacts achieved in the last three years, based on the zoning of priority ecosystems, including the Nuevitas bay, Santa Lucia beach and Cayo Sabinal, incorporating the areas of influence. We exemplified the different dimensions of the program in the key sectors: tourism, fisheries, agro - forestry and conservation; while offer some of the lessons learned, including the communicative dimension to enhance the success of the IMC, and the correspondent impact in the region.
