Abstract

Vulnerability analysis of the Naranjo River basin is a technical diagnostic study that provides basic and strategic information for the integrated management plan of water resources. For the study, six representative points of the basin were taken. Vulnerability is defined based on the use of indicators of the hydrological regim, identifies and confirms critical aspects such as low retention and water regulation, water stress by per capita availability of water. Quality was defined based on the criteria of FAO and other specific indicators for irrigation. The index of vulnerability for scarcity has increased from moderate to high for very low capacity for regulation and water retention and moderate use of the resource. The water is unfit for irrigation of agricultural crops, have slight to moderate restrictions. Risk of soil alkalinization product of the concentrations of bicarbonate in the water. Furthermore sodium water can pass into soil solution and replace the calcium and magnesium causing soil degradation. The vulnerability could increase with climate change, due to the potential reduction in supply and increased demand for water for agricultural activities in the area.
