Abstract

The Sergio Soto oil refinery produces 1150 t/year of dielectric oil. This saves roughly $1500/t. To the present the difficulties related to the management of its liquid residuals could not be solved and the production is limited. This research was aimed at finding alternatives to separate, characterize and recommend the use or management of the phases (oil and watery) of the obtained liquid residual. The quantification of oily components and the analysis of these results allow designing treatment options with aluminum sulfate and water in order to separate both phases. The watery phase was acid, with abundant organic material and it constituted the 96% of the residual. This phase should be treated before any use. The asphaltene constituted the 80% of the oily phase that is why it is advisable to assess its use in the asphalt production.
