Abstract

This article is intended to provide information about the possibilities offered by the use of a of water quality index (WQI) in the management of water resources. The index provides a convenient way to summarize the large amount of data generated in monitoring and facilitates communication of these results to a non-specialist audience. It presents two indices by way of comparison, showing the method of calculation and the way to present their results. Sets out certain aspects to take into account in applying the index of so as to obtain reliable results. Given its ability to synthesize complex information, as well as its potential as a tool of communication, is portrayed as a valuable tool for help in making decisions.
