Climatological characterization of the wind at the "Juan Gualberto Gómez" international airport in the period 2012-2020

Abstract

The climatological characterization of meteorological variables is a very important tool for forecasters. In the particular case of wind direction and speed, variables of great importance in decision-making during flight, having a tool of this type would help to substantially improve the forecast for greater safety in flight. The objective of the research is to characterize the behavior of the wind in the period 2012-2020, at the “Juan Gualberto Gómez” International Airport in Varadero. For this, the wind roses for the period 2012-2020, monthly and hourly, were made and an analysis of the daily march was carried out. It was identified that during the study period the east component winds were the most frequent, with an average speed of 12 km / h; wind directions from september to may of next year varied from east-northeast to south-southeast to prevail in june with more frequent component winds that ranged from east-southeast and south-southeast. The month of september had the highest number of weak variable winds, while calms were infrequent during all months. With respect to the daily march, the wind speed increased gradually, until 4 pm with components between the east and the south-southeast.
